Here in Texas we are experiencing the worst drought since the 1950's. According to this story from Time.com, ranchers are selling off cattle in record numbers due to the current conditions in Texas, making beef harder to come by, and raising prices dramatically. Since Texas leads the nation in number of cattle and cattle ranches, this will undoubtedly effect everyone who enjoys the occasional steak or hamburger.
Not only is cattle being affected by the current drought in Texas, but so are other agricultural items such as winter wheat and Texas' biggest cash crop cotton. Texas is king of cotton and leads the nation in production. No rain equals no cotton equals higher prices for clothing.
These are things that effect each and every American. As the member of a family on a budget, I am already faced with making the hard choices of what the most important, vital things are to spend our money on. If the choice were presented to me about which was more important; purchasing a new blouse or keeping my family fed, I would without hesitation choose my family every time. What if choices like these became more and more prevalent in our culture? What if this trend were to continue and fresh food supply became less and less? I do want to remain hopeful for the future of our country, but I also need to look realistically at the facts.
Earthquakes on the rise, drought, tropical storms on the rise, hurricane's, tornado's...all of this is really happening in our world all around us. I hope that day never comes that a loved one or I faces serious devastation, but should that day come...don't you want to be prepared? I know I do. Shelf Reliance can help.
